We are currently seeking an Electrical Engineering Intern. The Electrical Engineering Intern will work directly with engineers and management and be exposed to a variety of engineering activities related to new product development such as design, prototyping, and testing of safety related electronic/electrical products and equipment, as well as maintenance of existing products. This exposure is designed to provide the intern experience that will help them to evaluate which areas of engineering are best suited for their skillset and likewise allow company management to evaluate the intern’s ability to provide value in furthering company success. This position works in a team environment at our home office in Newburgh, IN. This is not a remote position.
This is a paid internship.
This position will report to the Hardware Manger.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Participate in product design meetings with members of other groups (management, sales and marketing, software, mechanical, manufacturing, etc.) to gather requirements
- Assist in development of product specifications (may require research of regulatory requirements for a given market and based on general requirements provided)
- Assist in building and testing design prototypes for proof of concept
- Participate in design reviews
- Perform research on various engineering related topics to assist during product development or testing
- Help design fixture/system to test PCB assembly and/or finished product assembly as well as develop the procedure for performing tests and documenting the results
- Create and maintain various forms of documentation such as manufacturing drawings, regulatory approval drawings, test procedures, test reports, user manuals, product specifications, evaluation reports, engineering proposals/estimates, technical reports etc.
- Manage and log time for multiple concurrent projects with different priority level
- Work on projects, both in groups and independently
- Shadowing experienced engineers on some projects to develop or hone new skills
Qualifications and Competencies
- Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Good problem-solving and analysis skills.
- Basic computer skills and able to use Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to manage time and keep up with multiple projects.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- High level of organization and detail-orientation.
- Strong work ethic and willingness to take initiative.
- Good attitude toward teamwork as well as the ability to work independently.
- Good ability to multitask and prioritize.
- Good time management.
- Some knowledge of the following is beneficial but not required.
- Analog and digital circuits.
- Basic electrical test, measurement, and/or troubleshooting techniques.
- Lab test equipment like DMMs, power supplies, function generators, and oscilloscopes
Working Conditions
- Most of the work will take place in a typical office setting (cubicle, desk, chair, computer, etc.) or in a lab/testing/development area (lab benches, test equipment, etc.)
- Possible travel to vendor or partner facilities may be required (such as a contract manufacturing or engineering facility) but are rarely different from normal office or lab conditions other than possible safety glasses and ESD dissipative gear that may be required.
- Possible travel to end-use locations, supporting initial product development and testing or troubleshooting abnormal or unusual issues observed in the field; Locations may include:
- Underground mining (coal, hard-rock, or other)
- Surface mining
- Other industrial/commercial facilities
- Matrix employees are furnished with and required to wear safety gear such as hard hats, steel toe shoes, reflective clothing, earplugs, and safety glasses when working in those locations requiring such protective gear
